Yes, it’s the best part of my job! I work with schools to learn about how young children develop trust in others and how this relates to their mental health/wellbeing.
Similar to Jamie, I haven’t worked with schools before, but it is something I would love to do in the future. I did volunteer at a primary school for a while after finishing my undergraduate degree which I really enjoyed though.
I’ve taught some interactive neuroscience classes to highschool students in Canada. The students (and even the teachers) were very interested in getting their dreams interpreted, which I had to reiterate was not really my field of expertise. Still, it was a lot of fun!
A few times I’ve worked as an assistant to the school’s psychologist and for this I mostly observed and helped the psychologist assess students, helped with organising their files on students and delivered workshops on mental health.
Another time was when I delivered therapy groups after classes at schools for children who were feeling anxious or angry.
yes! I have visited schools in the past to talk with them about the work I do, and what we have learnt about brain functioning from people who have had a brain injury. You may have learnt about Phineas Gage – the man who worked on the railroads and a tamping iron caused damage to the front of his brain. From this we learnt that emotions and personality are partly controlled by this area.
