I’ve only really decided my career path 4 years ago – it’s never too late!

I decided my career path around five years ago. I studied psychology as an undergraduate but then I took a few years out from studying where I had a job as a junior analyst. It was during this time that I realised I missed learning about psychology so I decided to undertake a master’s followed by a PhD.

For me, I decided upon my career path about 12 years ago while I was filming a documentary in Canada with North Korean refugees. I heard some terrible and traumatic stories about how individuals fled their country. It was here that I fell in love with understanding the human condition. I then decided to pursue psychology.

I still haven’t decided my career path ^^; I am currently working as a Postdoctoral Researcher (this is sort of like a training position one can take after getting a PhD), but I’m still not sure what I want to do once my postdoctoral training is finished. I could continue in research, or move into industry (for example, work at a pharmaceutical company), or even get into scientific publishing. I love science, but even within this field, there are still many paths to choose from!

I was deciding between psychology and fine arts for university. I attended a summer course at an art school – then realised that everyone there was AMAZING at art and the propspects of spending 4 years just studying art subjects was a bit too much for me. I wanted to learn about psychology and other things, so I decided to apply to psychology. I also considered law at some point, but thought I could always go back and do law if I’m sick of psychology (that never happened of course!) 🙂

That depends on how you define career path!

I decided to pursue psychology at 17 when I was in school and started applying to unis for psychology undergraduate courses.

It wasn’t until I was 21 and finishing my undergraduate that I figured out how many different kinds of psychologists there are and I decided I wanted to be a Clinical Psychologist, which requires work experience and some further studying. That led me to completing my Masters and getting passionate about working in dementia in particular and I decided that as well as working with people in therapy I also wanted to do research.

So at 23 I added to my career path and started my PhD, while also doing work experience in hospitals and clinics on the side.

The point is, I picked the area of psychology quite young but the career path keeps growing and changing every year, sometimes every day!

Not until I was 35! Psychology is my second career, after working in Finance for 18 years. In Psychology it is quite common that people come to it when they are a bit older. When I first started I thought I would be the oldest, but I train with people who are in their 20s, and others who are in their 50s!
