Current Job:
I run my own company. That means that I do the work for clients, but also do everything else. This includes, designing my logo and website, managing the business finances, social media marketing, sales and IT. I have a fantastic colleague who helps me with some administration and organisation.

I get bored easily and have never been very good at fitting into a system – I like freedom and autonomy. I am also very curious, especially about people and about how we get to live a good life. That means that I read a lot, chose to study and work in psychology, and like the constant juggling that comes from working for myself and having a wide variety of work and clients.

I have my own business and support organisations ranging from small start-ups to large, global corporates. I work mostly with leaders, sharing ideas about how to create healthy workplaces which will benefit individuals but also improve organisational outcomes. For example, I coach leaders, run team workshops, and run leadership development programmes. I also deliver webinars on-line. Psychology is a science, and I always try and collect data and evidence around what I do, and often present at conferences. Interventions I have delivered have had a proven impact on wellbeing, sleep and leadership measures for example.

My Typical Day:
My days vary hugely – from days in the office to being out with clients. I generally start the day taking my son to school. I might then be in my office for an hour, answering emails or preparing for a workshop. I’ll then drive to an office or a venue to run a workshop for the rest of the day with a group of 10 leaders. We might talk about what they want to achieve, and how they each want to contribute to that. We might finish around 5pm and on the way home I may stop for a swim, before returning to our busy household.

My days can be very different. I may be in my garden office all day, designing and preparing for workshops or webinars. I may deliver on-line, maybe an hour’s broadcast webinar to 50 people around stress management, or a three hour workshop on the power of listening in leadership. Or I may be out all day in a client’s office, having meetings, individual coaching sessions or writing guidance documents. I often use psychometrics – these are specially designed questionnaires to help people understand why they do what they do. I do a mix of individual and group work, although I prefer to work with groups as I find it more energising. I tend not to see clients on Mondays and Fridays – I work for myself and so I can decide when and where I work which I love. I also take a lot of holiday!

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would want to ask the students what they think is needed. Cheltenham (where I live) has a science festival in June and perhaps there is something that could be done as part of that event. Or perhaps I could talk to the British Psychological Society about psychologists going into schools to share information about careers in psychology.
